AirTag is a smart tracking device launched by Apple in 2021 designed to help users locate lost items such as keys, wallets or luggage. The product was released after almost 2 years of rumors, during which there were many indications that this product would be present in the market at some point, especially the integrations that were ready in iOS 13. After almost four years after the release of the first generation, it seems that an AirTag 2 device is about to be released.

With a compact, coin-shaped (or disk) design, the AirTag device works over the Find My network, using Bluetooth and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies for precise location. The AirTag also includes a speaker that emits sounds, making it easy to find when its owner is nearby. In addition, the device benefits from security and privacy features to prevent misuse, such as anti-tracking notifications.

What will AirTag 2 bring and when will it be released?

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple plans to release a new model, the AirTag 2, around the middle of next year. While the design will remain largely unchanged, the new AirTag, internally called the B589, will include three major improvements:

  • Extended range
  • Improved wireless chip
  • More privacy

If the first two features are anything to go by, we're glad to see that Apple will put more emphasis on privacy on the AirTag 2 device. There are many reported cases where the AirTag device has been used for unauthorized tracking of people, and some users have modified the devices to disable the speaker that could have emitted the anti-tracking notifications. Furthermore, the sale and use of AirTags is prohibited in certain countries, with the main concern being that AirTags could be used to track people without their knowledge.
