If we expected that in 2025 we would have the new versions iOS 19, macOS 16 and iPadOS 19, it seems that Apple has other plans. According to a report presented by Bloomberg, Apple has plans for all versions of operating systems released this year to be version number 26. So, this year they will be released iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26.

This change will be officially announced within WWDC 2025, and the new names will be:

  • visionOS 26 (instead of visionOS 3)
  • iOS 26 (instead of iOS 19)
  • macOS 26 (instead of macOS 16)
  • iPadOS 26 (instead of iPadOS 19)
  • watchOS 26 (instead of watchOS 12)
  • tvOS 26 (Instead of tvOS 19)

Why does Apple do this change?

Although this decision seems quite strange, the main reason is clarity. The transition to a year -based name scheme brings more coherence for users and developers. Instead of trying to keep up with numbered versions on each platform, everyone will know exactly what software Apple's ecosystem is.

It is a strategy similar to that used by the automotive industry: eg, Toyota Tacoma 2026 It will appear on the market at the end of 2025, but the name reflects the year of use, not the date of launch. Apple applies the same principle - a familiar model, easy to understand and which inspires consistency.

Not just a new name for iOS 26 but also a new design

This alignment of the names also comes with important redesignations for all platforms. Apple wants to create a unitary experience, both visually and functionally. Therefore, iOS 26 could mean more than a change of name-it could mark the beginning of a new era in the Apple software design. However, we are curious if the new version will bring significant changes in functionality and user experience.

If it is to take me after future features of iPhone 17 Pro, honestly, I do not have too high expectations from the future iOS operating system.

It remains to be seen what surprises Apple will bring to WWDC, but one thing is clear: 2025 will be a defining year for the Apple ecosystem, and iOS 26 will be in the spotlight.
