Before we talk about MagSafe Duo, we can't help but take a look at Apple's launch event since its end 2017, when a was presented wireless charger what would he be able to simultaneously charge three devicesApple's. A iPhone, and Apple Watch and AirPods 2 case. In the same event, Apple launched iPhone 8 and iPhone X (compatible for wireless charging) and in spring of 2019, with the release of iOS 12.2 the support for AirPower. It seemed that everything was ready for the miracle charger, and its entry into the market is only a matter of a very short time.
Of course, in the meantime Apple had launched the iPhone Xr and iPhone XS, an event in the fall of 2018 in which AirPower was also discussed.

In March 209, only a few days after adding AirPower support in iOS 12.2, Apple announced that it was abandoning the AirPower project. The reason was as simple as possible. AirPower doesn't live up to Apple's quality standards.

At the event on October 13, 2020, Apple launched MagSafe Duo Charger. A wireless charger with an interesting, premium design, capable of simultaneously charging one iPhone and a Apple Watch.

Design – MagSafe Duo Charger

As I said above, the design of MagSafe Duo is a premium one, which is related to the Apple culture.

However, there are some disadvantages. MagSafe Duo cannot be used if it is folded (closed) and the tape that separates the two parts also folds becomes very weak after only a few uses. The material from which it is made, a soft touch silicone is predisposed as in time to degrade and get dirty. Especially since MagSafe Duo only comes in the white version.
I have an Apple Smart Keyboard Folio for iPad Pro 11-inch, which after not even two months of use looks pathetic on the external surfaces, no matter how much I tried to protect it. I probably needed a cover for the cover.
The MagSafe Duo is not an ideal choice as a wireless "charging station" for the office. If for the Apple Watch the magnetic disc can be raised, the iPhone can only be left in a horizontal position.

MagSafe Duo Charger compatibility and charging power

MagSafe Duo has been designed for iPhone 12 and all models of Apple Watch. If you have an iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max and Apple Watch (any model), you can consider cumparati un MagSafe Duo Charger. It is recommended to buy an original case, compatible with MagSafe. Since it is a magnetic wireless charger, the material between the iPhone and MagSafe is very important. Apple has a fairly generous collection of cases with MagSafe for all iPhone 12 models.
You can also charge the headphone case on the iPhone holder AirPods 2 or AirPods Pro. It also supports other devices certified for Qi wireless charging, but you will have a very long waiting time until the battery reaches 50%.

Compatible with iPhone 8 or later models, MagSafe Duo is only recommended for iPhone 12. Older models will charge in a very long time compared to other wireless chargers.

If you have an iPhone 12 and an Apple Watch, then you should know that in addition to the purchase price of the MagSafe Duo, you also have to take out a sum of money for the network adapter. The MagSafe Duo Charger does not come with a mains charger, and its performance they depend very much on those of the adapter.

For a fast loading up to 14W (the maximum power of the MagSafe Duo), you need a adaptor USB-C de 27W (or greater) which supports 9V/3A. The Apple USB-C 29W adapter is not compatible.
Loading up to 11W with MagSafe Duo can only be secured with adapters USB-C de 11W si 9V/2.22A. No USB-A adapter is compatible with MagSafe. Moreover, in the MagSafe Duo Charger package you will also receive one cablu USB-C la Lightning, similar to those in the packages iPhone 12 and AirPods Pro.
iPhone 12 mini is limited to fast wireless charging maxim 12W with a minimum 9 V/2.62 A adapter.

If you have an adapter larger than 9 V/3 A at home, you are exempt from a new purchase. They can be used with MagSafe Duo and you will be able to charge the iPhone 12 with a power of up to 14W.

However, there is a big inconvenience. The data above are only valid if you only have iPhone 12 charged on MagSafe Duo. If we have iPhone 12 and an Apple Watch with us, the power of the adapter must be at least 15W with 5 V/3 A or 9 V/1.67 A. And under these conditions, iPhone 12 charging will be slower.
Charging will be limited to 7.5 W if you charge AirPods 2 or AirPods Pro.

There is also an iPhone battery protection scenario. If the iPhone battery gets very hot, the wireless power will be turned off automatically from the software when it reaches 80% battery charge level.

As far as I'm concerned, after getting my hands on a MagSafe Duo Charger, I've convinced myself that it's not yet time for this purchase, even though I have all the devices recommended for it.

I've been writing passionately since 2004 about Windows and Linux operating systems, and since 2010 I've become a fan of Apple University. I'm currently writing tutorials for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and other Apple devices.
