The title of the article are brought two issues distinct on receiving text messages. One is related to not receiving SMS messages (SMS Messages) Yes high of failure to receive messages iMessage type when they were sent while cd iPhone destination was closed.

Before we see why these problems appear and how they can be solved, let's see the difference between iMessage and SMS text message.
Pe iPhone and iPad, that SMS and the IMessage can be shipped and received through the application ”Messages"The presence by default on all iOS operating systems. Even if both types of messages arrive and are sent by the same application, the shipping and delivery protocol is completely different.
Let's see a brief description of the two services: SMS if iMessage, to better understand what are the causes from which these messages are not always delivered, if they have been sent within a time period in which iPhone destination was closed.

Text Messages – SMS vs. iMessages

SMS text messages are present on all mobile phones, from the oldest models to top smartphones. This SMS service appeared practically before mobile phones, being present since 1984 on reception devices - emission and classic phones.
Nowadays, SMS They are sent and received via the mobile operator with a Message Center. Sending and sending SMS messages does not involve internet connection.

IMessage It is a service instant messaging, developed by Apple and launched the iPhone with iOS 5, in October 2011. The IMESSAGE service works only internet connection (Wi-Fi or 3G/4G), and data transport is done through Apple servers, where each device will be recorded. This service is only available on Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and on all computers or laptops Mac/ MacBook company products.
IMESSAGE and SMS are not compatible services. You cannot send a text message through the IMESSAGE protocol on a regular smartphone or on an iPhone that does not have this activated service.

Enabling and disabling imessages is in SettingsIMessage (green tick). Since the registration is done by Apple's Message Center, when activating the service You will be charged equivalent sending an international SMS. Tax you will be and if you use this service on 3G or 4G and do not have data traffic included in mobile Internet subscription.

After I understand the big ones between the two text messages services, let's see now why we don't have the messages that were sent to us while we had a closed iPhone.

Why not receive SMS text messages that have been sent while I was locked iPhone

The fact that SMS no longer enters the iPhone after it has been reopened is not a problem itself. One of the characteristics of SMS text messages, is "Period of validity"(Validity period). Depending on the mobile operator of the one who sends the message, they can be exercised with a limited or unlimited validity. There are mobile phones that offer this option in settings. SMS messages are leaving the sender's phone to Message Center of the mobile operator (on the older phones, the number of the message center had to be able to work), to be delivered to the recipient had to be set manually. If the sender has set as validity hour, and we iPhone open after more than an hour from the time the message was sent, this one will be deleted from the message center operator and will be delivered.
This is the main cause from which we no longer receive SMS messages shipped during the period when iPhone was closed.

Why we do not receive iMessage we were sent while I was locked iPhone

As I said above, the shipping and receiving immesage messages on the iPhone is done via the Internet and Apple servers.
Nonivating immesage messages can have more causes:

  1. The sender did not have the iPhone, Mac or iPad connected to the Internet when sending the message, then closed the device or erased the message from the Messages application.
  2. The sender did not have in the "Messages" application "Send As SMS" that allowed the message to be shipped as SMS when IMSAGE is not available.
  3. The recipient's iPhone is not connected to the Internet after it has been reopened, and IMSESAGE messages cannot enter.
  4. The sender has erased the message or conversation before it is sent to Apple servers or before the recipient opens its device.
  5. The problem of registration of mobile operator servers of Apple iMessage

These have the main causes from which the messages sent to you do not reach you after reopening the iPhone.
If you have discovered other causes or we can help you with something, do not hesitate to leave us your comments.

I've been writing passionately since 2004 about Windows and Linux operating systems, and since 2010 I've become a fan of Apple University. I'm currently writing tutorials for Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and other Apple devices.
