Alternative app stores will not work outside the EU

One of the biggest changes brought by iOS 17.4 gives EU users the ability to use alternative app stores to install games and apps on their iPhone.

This change was made by Apple following the imposition of a regulation by the European Commission, which provides that iPhone or iPad users can install applications and games without depending entirely on the App Store.

Because this feature is only valid for users in European Union member countries, Apple has specified some limitations that users have when they leave the EU space.

If you leave the European Union for short trips, you will continue to have access to alternative app stores for a grace period. If you leave for too long, you will lose access to some functionality, including installing new alternative app markets. Apps you've installed from alternative app markets will continue to work, but they won't be able to be updated by the market you downloaded them from.

However, Apple did not specify how long the grace period actually lasts for short trips. Alternative app stores are available in all 27 EU countries, and this is the first time that users in these countries can download apps from outside the App Store.
