Update:

Many iPhone owners do not know how to use even 50% of the capabilities and characteristics of the device. Many of the applications and utilities installed on the iPhone are not exploited to the maximum, and as for the Messages application, many do not know what the difference between IMSESAGE and SMS/MMS. IMESSAGE VS. SMS/MMS

The characteristics of the Message application on the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Mac

Before we see what it is with the three services, IMessage, SMS and MMS, let's see a little what are the characteristics of the Messages application. Application that we find on each iPhone, iPad, Pod Touch, Apple Watch and Mac.

IMessage

Although many associate the Messages application with the shipment and reception of text messages type SMS, the Messages application supports and MMS services and IMessage. Each service having its own characteristics and using separate broadcast and reception protocols.

IMSESAGE VS SMS/MMS - which is the difference between these services

SMS (Short Message Service) is the text messages service supported by mobile telephony operators. When we receive or send an SMS message, it uses Operator's GSM protocol. No images, video content, documents or other files can be sent by SMS. SMS text messages can only be changed between phone numbers.

MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is also a service offered by mobile telephony operators, but small media can be sent through MMS. MMS uses the entire GSM cell network and most often MMS messages are additionally taxed by mobile operators.

IMESSAGE is Apple's Messaging Service, and it can only be used between users in the ecosystem. It is necessary for both the sender and the recipient to possess an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac device and have the IMSSAGE activated service.
Through IMESSAGE you can send both text messages and media files (photos, video), documents, voice messages, emoji, stickers and other files. The connection in the conversation is made on the basis of Apple ID, and not on the phone number as it is for SMS and MMS.
The IMESAGE service requires internet connection.

The confusion of many users appears due to the fact that both Imassage and SMS/MMS, I use the Messages application. For this reason, it has often happened to send pictures or videos to users who do not have iPhone, and these messages arrive as MMS to the recipient, and we will be charged by the mobile operator.

How do we distinguish the immesage conversations from SMS/MMS?

A SMS or MMS conversation in the Messages application on iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch or iPad, is marked with verd, while a immesage conversation is offended with blue. Both the recipient's phone number and the phrases sent in the conversation are differentiated by these two colors.

When we want to start a new conversation and seek the recipient contact, the compatible phone numbers are marked with blue, while the non -patients are green.

It is very possible that they will not appear marked with blue and green as soon as you search. Wait for about two seconds until Apple checks the state of contacts in your agenda.

iMessage pe iOS 16

Apple added in iOS 16 new features of Messages for the IMESSAGE service. Users can edit words from a shipped message, delete a sent message or mark a conversation as a "side".
